Set amongst the woodland of Dorset lays 65 acres of sanctuary for over 230 primates of 15 different species. Originally set up to provide abused Spanish beach chimps with a permanent, stable home. Monkey World today works with foreign governments from all over the world to stop the illegal smuggling of apes out of Africa and Asia. For further information please go to; www.monkeyworld.org
Corfe Castle has had a long and eventful history. Positioned strategically in the gap between the Purbeck hills, it was perfect for defending inland Dorset against attack from the sea. The surrounding agricultural lands and forests were rich, and could be used to provide food and resources for the Castle. Not surprisingly, therefore, Corfe Castle was a royal fortress for over 600 years. www.nationaltrust.org.uk
There are plenty of activities in Purbeck to keep all the family amused. Swanage is an unspoilt traditional English seaside resort, containing historic inns and taverns, theatre, restaurants, cafes, funfairs and amusements.
Trips are run from the end of the pier, for fishing, excursions to the nearby Brownsea Island and boat cruises.
Swanage is surrounded by clean, gentle shelving sandy beaches thought to be some of the best in England, ideal for bathing, walking, scuba diving, water skiing and windsurfing. You can relax on the beach, take a stroll along the promenade, or play a round of golf at many of the surrounding golf courses.
At the beginning of August Swanage hosts one of biggest carnivals on the south coast, a full week of fun and games with firework displays three times in the week and many of events taking place only five minutes walk from Grace Gardens on the sandpit field.
Swanage is the terminus of the award winning Swanage steam railway. You can take a ride along a classis Southern railway steam branch, past timeless dairy farms and pleasant sun-bathed rolling hills, occupied by Purbeck stone built villages and onto Corfe Castle. Corfe contains a magnificent medieval castle, where Cromwell defeated the Royalists, as well as numerous ale houses and tea rooms.
